SEXUALITY EDUCATOR INTERNSHIP

SUMMER 2021

 

Masakhane Center is seeking passionate, motivated people to join our education team! Interns receive extensive training on a variety of sexuality topics and workshop facilitation techniques.

 

As an all-volunteer organization, this internship is unpaid. However, due to our wonderful donors, we are currently able to offer a few $500 stipends for local Black, Indigenous and Latinx trans, non-binary, and queer folks to participate. More details below.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

This is a remote internship where the main responsibility is to provide online workshops to young people in and around the Newark, NJ community. In addition, interns also work on a significant project. Summer projects include: fundraising, social media programming, grant writing, curriculum development, workshop handouts and sex ed video creations.

 

SCHEDULE

  • This internship runs from June 1, 2021 to August 13, 2021.

  • Interns must be available to work Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm EST.

 

WE ARE SEEKING PEOPLE WHO…

  • Advocate for sex positive, pleasure-focused education.

  • Advocate for reproductive justice, including full abortion rights and the rights of young pregnant and parenting folks.

  • Advocate for the rights of people marginalized for their orientations, gender alignments and/or expressions.

  • Have the ability to livestream or record themselves discussing a variety of sexuality topics. Interns must have reliable internet access during working hours.

  • Have the ability to use (or learn to use) Microsoft Office365.

  • Are organized, reliable and creative.

  • Have demonstrated the ability to work within a team and independently.

 

STIPEND INFORMATION

  • Through the generous donations of our supporters, we are able to provide four $500 stipends to local Black, Indigenous and Latinx queer, non-binary and trans interns.

  • Interns receiving a stipend must live in one of the following communities: Newark, Irvington, East Orange, Orange, or South Orange.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Do I have to be a student in order to intern?

    • No. Masakhane does not have any educational requirements for any of our internship programs.

  • Can I still apply after the deadline?

    • No applications are accepted after the May 18th deadline.

  • Can I apply for a stipend even though I don’t live in one of the listed communities?

    • No. Our stipends are specifically for local folks.

  • Can I apply for a stipend if I am not Black, Indigenous, Latinx, queer, non-binary or trans?

    • No. Our stipends is specifically for our most marginalized community members: Black, Indigenous, Latinx, queer, non-binary and trans people.

  • How is the stipend distributed?

    • Stipends are distributed at the end of the internship.

  • When will I be informed if I am accepted as an intern/receiving a stipend?

    • Interns are informed within 48 hours of their interview.

  • Can I intern for a shorter period than outlined in the job description?

    • Due to the highly collaborative nature of our internship program, we ask everyone to intern during the same time period, June 1st to August 13th. Interns can continue to work with us past the August 13th date.

  • What can I expect to get out of a Sexuality Educator Internship with Masakhane Center?

    • Gain hands-on experience working with a nonprofit, community-based organization.

    • Receive extensive training on all workshop topics offered by Masakhane, as well as public speaking, leadership and general communication skills.

    • The opportunity to lead and assist with workshops and major organizational projects.

    • The ability to practice teamwork, collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills that can be applied in future community work, academic environments and/or professional careers.

    • Mentorship with experienced Sexuality Educators.

    • Successful interns will receive a strong letter of recommendation and a certification of completion of our sexuality education training program.

SEXUALITY EDUCATOR INTERNSHIP

SCHOOL YEAR 2021-2022

 

Masakhane Center is seeking passionate, motivated people to join our education team! Interns work in and around the Newark, NJ community facilitating sex positive workshops with young people in schools and youth organizations. Interns receive extensive training on a variety of sexuality topics and workshop facilitation techniques.

As an all-volunteer organization, this internship is unpaid. However, thanks to our wonderful donors, we are currently able to offer a few $500 stipends for local Black, Indigenous and Latinx trans, non-binary, and queer folks to participate. More details below.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic we do not yet know whether this internship will be remote or in-person, that decision will be made based on what is safe for our community. Even if our office is open, interns will be permitted to be remote during the 2021 – 2022 school year.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Facilitate sexuality workshops at local schools and community-based organizations.

  • Create and execute a significant project that utilizes current skills and interests, and are in line with Masakhane’s needs.

  • Assist with social media planning and daily posting.

  • Assist at conferences and health fairs, as needed.

  • Assist in the occasional planning and execution of special events.

 

SCHEDULE

This internship runs from September 7, 2021 to May 12, 2022.

 

Interns must attend a mandatory online training on the following days/times:

  • September 7th – October 7th  

  • Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays

  • 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

 

After completing training, interns must be available to work at least 15 hours per week. These hours must be completed Tuesdays, Wednesdays and/or Thursdays between the hours of 8:00 am and 6:30 pm.

Masakhane's internship program only operates during the days and times listed above. If you are unable to complete your 15 hours during that time frame, please do not apply.

 

WE ARE SEEKING PEOPLE WHO CAN…

  • Advocate for sex positive, pleasure-focused education.

  • Advocate for reproductive justice, including full abortion rights and the rights of young pregnant and parenting folks.

  • Advocate for the rights of people marginalized for their orientations, gender alignments and/or expressions.

  • Travel throughout Newark. Experience living, working and/or going to school in Newark or a neighboring community is preferred. (This is, of course, dependent on the current health crisis.)

  • Have the ability to livestream or record themselves discussing a variety of sexuality topics. Interns must have reliable internet access during working hours.

  • Use Office365 or have the ability to learn how to use it.

  • Be organized, responsible and reliable.

  • Demonstrate creativity.

  • Work within a team and independently.

 

LOCATION

Our office is located in Gallery Aferro, near the corner of Market Street and University Ave. However, Sexuality Educator interns are expected to travel to programming at locations throughout Newark, NJ, which may include travel by public transit. We cover travel expenses for interns going to/from programming. This is, of course, dependent on the current health crisis.
