SEXUALITY EDUCATOR INTERNSHIP

SCHOOL YEAR 2021-2022 (REMOTE)

 

Masakhane Center is seeking passionate, motivated young people to join our education team! This is a remote internship that provides online workshops to young people in and around the Newark, NJ community. Interns receive extensive training on a variety of sexuality topics and workshop facilitation techniques.

As an all-volunteer organization, this internship is unpaid. However, thanks to our wonderful donors, we are currently able to offer a few $500 stipends for local Black, Indigenous and Latinx trans, non-binary, and queer folks to participate. More details below.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Facilitate online sexuality education workshops for young people.

  • Create and execute a significant project that utilizes current skills and interests, and are in line with Masakhane’s needs.

  • Assist with social media planning and daily posting.

  • Assist in the occasional planning and execution of special events.

 

SCHEDULE

This internship runs from September 7, 2021 to May 12, 2022.

 

Interns must attend a mandatory online training on the following days/times:

  • September 7th – September 30th     

  • Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays

  • 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

 

Between October 5th and May 12th, interns must be available:

  • Tuesdays & Thursdays

  • 10:00 am – 6:00 pm

 

WE ARE SEEKING PEOPLE WHO CAN…

  • Advocate for sex positive, pleasure-focused education.

  • Advocate for reproductive justice, including full abortion rights and the rights of young pregnant and parenting folks.

  • Advocate for the rights of people marginalized for their orientations, gender alignments and/or expressions.

  • Have the ability to livestream or record themselves discussing a variety of sexuality topics. Interns must have reliable internet access during working hours.

  • Have the ability to use (or learn to use) Microsoft Office365.

  • Are organized, reliable and creative.

  • Have demonstrated the ability to work within a team and independently.

 

 

STIPEND INFORMATION

  • Through the generous donations of our supporters, we are able to provide four $500 stipends to local Black, Indigenous and Latinx queer, non-binary and trans interns.

  • Interns receiving a stipend must live in OR be from one of the following communities: Newark, Irvington, East Orange, Orange, or South Orange.

  • Do I have to be a student in order to intern?

    • No. Masakhane does not have any educational requirements for any of our internship programs.

  • Can I still apply after the deadline?

    • No applications are accepted after the August 24th deadline.

  • Can I apply for a stipend even though I don’t live in one of the listed communities?

    • No. Our stipends are specifically for local folks.

  • Can I apply for a stipend if I am not Black, Indigenous, Latinx, queer, non-binary or trans?

    • No. Our stipends is specifically for our most marginalized community members: queer, non-binary and trans Black, Indigenous, and Latinx folks.

  • How is the stipend distributed?

    • One third of the stipend is distributed at the beginning of the internship, the second third is distributed halfway through, and the third is distributed at the end of the internship. Other arrangements can be made depending on the intern’s needs.

  • When will I be informed if I am accepted as an intern/receiving a stipend?

    • Interns are informed within 48 hours of their interview.

  • Can I intern for a shorter period than outlined in the job description?

    • Due to the highly collaborative nature of our internship program, we ask everyone to intern during the same time period, September 7, 2021 to May 12, 2022. Interns can continue to work with us past the May 12th date.

  • What can I expect to get out of a Sexuality Educator Internship with Masakhane Center?

    • Gain hands-on experience working with a nonprofit, community-based organization.

    • Receive extensive training on all workshop topics offered by Masakhane, as well as public speaking, leadership and general communication skills.

    • The opportunity to lead and assist with workshops and major organizational projects.

    • The ability to practice teamwork, collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills that can be applied in future community work, academic environments and/or professional careers.

    • Mentorship with experienced Sexuality Educators.

    • Successful interns will receive a strong letter of recommendation and a certification of completion of our sexuality education training program.

This is an in-person internship that provides workshops to young people in and around the Newark, NJ community. Interns receive extensive training on a variety of sexuality topics and workshop facilitation techniques.

As an all-volunteer organization, this internship is unpaid. However, thanks to our wonderful donors, we are currently able to offer a few $500 stipends for local Black, Indigenous and Latinx trans, non-binary, and queer folks to participate. More details below.

  • Facilitate sexuality workshops at local schools and community-based organizations.

  • Create and execute a significant project that utilizes current skills and interests, and are in line with Masakhane’s needs.

  • Assist with social media planning and daily posting.

  • Assist at conferences and health fairs, as needed.

  • Assist in the occasional planning and execution of special events.

 

SCHEDULE

  • This internship runs from January 11, 2022 to May 12, 2022.

  • Interns must be available to work at least every Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm.
