OUR INTERNSHIPS

IN-PERSON SEXUALITY EDUCATOR INTERNSHIP

Sexuality Educator Interns receive extensive training in workshop facilitation and all of the sexuality topics we offer. We are an all-volunteer organization and this internship is unpaid.
 

Sexuality Educator Interns mainly assist in the facilitation of youth workshops in and around the Newark, NJ community. In addition, interns have the opportunity to take on additional responsibilities, including assisting with community events, fundraising, and creating different types of educational content.

 

SCHEDULE

  • All interns must be available to work at least 15 hours per week, including every Tuesday and Thursday between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm.

  • Folks applying for the Spring 2023 Internship must be able to start on January 10, 2023 and work through May 11, 2023.

 

WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR

  • Someone who can advocate for sex positive, pleasure focused education.

  • Someone who can advocate for reproductive justice, including full abortion rights and the rights of young pregnant and parenting folks.

  • Someone who can advocate for the rights of people marginalized for their sexual orientations, gender alignments and/or expressions.

  • Someone creative.

  • Someone who can travel throughout Newark, NJ and the surrounding communities.

  • Someone who enjoys working in a collaborative environment.

  • Do I have to be a student in order to intern?

    • No. Masakhane does not have any educational requirements for this internship program. For folks who are in school, we do offer assistance in seeking credit from school programs.

  • Can I still apply after the deadline?

    • No applications are accepted after the listed deadlines.

  • When will I be informed if I am accepted as an intern?

    • Interns are informed within 48 hours of their interview.

  • Who will be my supervisor?

    • All interns are directly supervised by our Executive Director, Stephanie Franklin. Some interns also work closely with different board members on projects.

  • What can I expect to get out of a Sexuality Educator Internship with Masakhane Center?

    • Gain hands-on experience working with a nonprofit, community-based organization.

    • Receive extensive training on a variety of sexuality topics, as well as facilitation, public speaking, leadership and general communication skills.

    • The opportunity to lead and assist with workshops and major organizational projects.

    • The ability to practice teamwork, collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills that can be applied in future community work, academic environments and/or professional careers.

    • Mentorship with experienced Sexuality Educators.

    • Successful interns will receive a strong letter of recommendation.

REMOTE SEXUALITY EDUCATOR INTERNSHIP

This remote internship program is specifically designed for creative people to work on sexuality education programming through a variety of projects. We are looking for people who can create online sexuality education content, and assist our organization in at least one of the following categories:

HIGH SCHOOL SEXUALITY EDUCATOR INTERNSHIP

Masakhane Center is currently offering an in-person internship program for high school students. Sexuality Educator Interns receive extensive training in workshop facilitation and all of the sexuality topics we offer.

We are an all-volunteer organization and this internship is unpaid. However, thanks to our wonderful donors, we are currently able to offer a $250 stipend for our high school interns. More stipend details below.

 

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

High school interns will be responsible for creating and executing a significant project that utilizes their skills and interests, and are in line with Masakhane’s needs. Intern projects include curriculum development, social media, workshop facilitation, and creating educational materials.

Other tasks that may be assigned to high school interns include assisting with health fairs, community events, and fundraising.

 

SCHEDULE

This is a school year internship that runs from October 4, 2022 to May 11, 2023. The hours for this internship are every Tuesday and Thursday from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

  • Someone who can advocate for the rights of trans, queer, non-binary and gender expansive folks.

  • Someone who enjoys working in a collaborative environment.

The stipend is specifically for high school students pursing this internship, and is distributed at the end of the internship.
